MEMPHIS, Tenn. — A planned meeting to return a set of house keys allegedly turned into a shooting outside a Memphis police precinct, where a 24-year-old woman is accused of opening fire on her former boyfriend.
The incident happened shortly before 4:30 p.m. on Sept. 6 outside the Austin Peay police precinct, according to a probable cause affidavit. Officers were inside the station when they suddenly heard multiple gunshots coming from outside. A witness then rushed into the police station and reported that a man had been shot.
According to the affidavit, the witness told investigators that a silver Honda had pulled up near a black Nissan. A woman wearing a flowery dress reportedly got out of the passenger side of the Honda, approached the Nissan and began firing at the man.
Afterward, she allegedly returned to the Honda and left the area.
Victim Drives Away After Being Shot
Despite suffering multiple gunshot wounds, the victim was reportedly able to get into his own vehicle and drive away from the scene.
The witness later told police that the man had been shot in both legs. He was eventually located at Methodist North Hospital, where he was being treated for multiple gunshot wounds.
The victim gave investigators his version of what happened.
He reportedly said he had gone to the police precinct to get his house key from Moore, whom he initially described to investigators as his girlfriend. After receiving the key, he got out of his vehicle and allegedly attempted to grab Moore when she shot him, according to the affidavit.
Moore, however, provided police with a different account of their relationship and what happened before the shooting.
Moore Says Ex-Boyfriend Assaulted Her
Moore told investigators that the man was actually her ex-boyfriend and that the two had recently ended their relationship.
She said they had arranged to meet so she could return his keys.
A passenger who was inside Moore’s vehicle provided investigators with an account that supported Moore’s claim that the confrontation became physical before the shooting.
According to the passenger, Moore approached the black vehicle to give her ex-boyfriend a key. The passenger told police that the man then struck Moore in the back of the head and knocked her glasses off.
The passenger said the man appeared to be moving toward Moore again when she allegedly pulled a black handgun from her bra and fired several shots.
Moore later allegedly admitted to police that she shot her ex, but maintained that she did so after he assaulted her.
Bullet Strikes Memphis Police Precinct
The shooting occurred in an especially dangerous location because police officers were inside the precinct at the time.
Investigators determined that one bullet went through the front window of the police station, where multiple officers were present during the gunfire.
Police recovered a bullet fragment and four spent 9 mm shell casings at the scene, according to the probable cause affidavit.
Officers stopped the silver Honda in the precinct parking lot and detained Moore.
Police subsequently obtained and executed a search warrant on the vehicle. Investigators reportedly recovered a black Taurus G3C 9 mm handgun from the front seat of the Honda.
The weapon was taken as evidence as detectives continued investigating the shooting.
Woman Faces Multiple Criminal Charges
Moore was taken into custody following an interview with investigators. According to court records, she faces one count each of aggravated assault, domestic assault with bodily harm and reckless endangerment with a deadly weapon.
Authorities transported her to jail after the interview.
She remained detained on $125,000 bond, according to court records. Her ex-boyfriend remained in critical condition following the shooting.
It was not immediately clear when Moore was scheduled to return to court.
The investigation remains focused on what happened during the confrontation outside the precinct, including the conflicting accounts about whether the victim assaulted Moore before she opened fire.
The allegations against Moore remain accusations, and the charges must be resolved through the court process.
