ST. LAWRENCE ISLAND, Alaska — A 15-year-old boy survived a terrifying ordeal in the freezing Bering Sea, clinging to an overturned boat for days before rescuers finally spotted him.
The teenager, identified by his family as Derek Parker, was found Monday afternoon aboard an overturned 18-foot skiff about four miles east of Alaska’s St. Lawrence Island, according to the U.S. Coast Guard.
Derek had been missing since Friday, when he and two other people left the Siberian Yupik village of Savoonga aboard the boat. The group was expected to return by early Sunday morning, but they never made it back.
By Monday, the teenager was alone with the overturned vessel after his older brother and another crew member drowned.
Family members said Derek’s older brother, who was captaining the boat, became trapped beneath the vessel after it capsized. The third crew member survived alongside Derek for another day before also dying.
The teenager reportedly tried desperately to hold onto both men, even after they drowned.
“He held onto the other two as long as he can even after they drowned. He is alive,” his aunt wrote in a heartbreaking Facebook post.
Coast Guard Launches Search After Crew Goes Missing
The group had departed Savoonga on Friday, with their return expected around 3 a.m. Sunday.
When they failed to arrive, Alaska State Troopers notified the Coast Guard at approximately 8:30 p.m. Sunday that the group was overdue.
The search faced difficult conditions. Poor weather and limited visibility prevented a Coast Guard aircraft from reaching the search area until Monday morning, while state troopers and local authorities continued searching from shore.
The remote location added another challenge. Savoonga is located on the northern coast of St. Lawrence Island, more than 160 miles west of Nome and roughly 40 miles from Russia.
Then, at about 3 p.m. Monday, an HC-130 Hercules aircrew spotted the overturned boat. They could also see the teenager clinging to it.
Rescue Crew Spots Teen in Freezing Water
The Coast Guard immediately began coordinating the rescue.
The aircraft dropped a life raft and survival equipment for Derek while arrangements were made for a nearby fishing vessel, the Northwest Explorer, to reach him.
Before leaving the area to refuel, the HC-130 crew deployed a line of flares to help guide the fishing vessel toward the overturned boat. The strategy worked.
The Northwest Explorer reached the teenager, rescued him from the frigid waters and recovered the two unresponsive men from the sea.
Derek was showing symptoms of hypothermia, an especially serious danger after spending an extended period exposed to the cold Bering Sea.
All three were transported to Nome, Alaska.

Family Mourns Two Men After Miraculous Survival
The tragedy has devastated Savoonga, a small community of roughly 800 people. According to family members, Derek’s older brother leaves behind two children.
A family GoFundMe described the deaths as a devastating loss for the community and said the family was seeking financial help with travel expenses and bringing the deceased men home.
“My nephew and one of his crew members passed away doing what he loved, out in the Bering Sea. My other nephew was found alive. Our village is mourning the loss of two,” the fundraiser states.
The family’s fundraising effort is also intended to support Derek and his mother as they deal with the aftermath of the tragedy.
Coast Guard Praises Rescue Effort
Rear Admiral Bob Little, commander of the Coast Guard’s Arctic District, expressed condolences to the families and praised everyone involved in the search and rescue mission.
“Our hearts go out to the families, friends, and communities affected by the tragic loss of these two mariners,” Little said.
He also thanked the crew of the Northwest Explorer, along with federal, state, village first responders and other mission partners who helped locate and rescue Derek.
The teenager’s survival after spending days exposed to the frigid Bering Sea has brought a measure of hope to an otherwise devastating tragedy.
While one family prepares to mourn two lives lost, another chapter of the story is just beginning for Derek, who survived an ordeal that could easily have ended differently.
