NYPD Officer Accidentally Fires Gun Inside Brooklyn Subway Station, Injuring Cop and Bystander

BROOKLYN, N.Y. — A routine afternoon inside a Brooklyn subway station turned chaotic Thursday when an NYPD officer accidentally discharged her service weapon, sending bullet fragments into a fellow officer and a nearby bystander, authorities said.

The incident happened at approximately 4:40 p.m. inside the Kingston-Throop Avenue station in Bedford-Stuyvesant.

According to the NYPD, the officer’s gun went off accidentally inside the station. The discharge immediately turned the busy transit location into an emergency scene as another police officer and a woman inside the station were struck by fragments from the bullet.

The incident involved three people in total: the officer whose weapon discharged, a male NYPD officer who was hit, and a 34-year-old woman who was also struck.

Police said the male officer and the 34-year-old woman were injured by bullet fragments rather than being directly struck by the fired round.

The unexpected gunfire prompted an emergency response at the subway station, with all three people involved ultimately transported to a hospital.

Despite the frightening circumstances, authorities said the injuries were not considered life-threatening at the time.

All three people were hospitalized in stable condition, according to the NYPD. They have since been released from the hospital.

The incident could have had a much more serious outcome given that it happened inside a public subway station, where passengers and transit workers may have been nearby.

Three People Taken to Hospital After Discharge

The officer whose service weapon accidentally discharged was also taken to the hospital following the incident. The other officer and the civilian woman were transported for treatment after being struck by the fragments.

Authorities have not indicated that any of the three suffered life-threatening injuries, and all three were later released.
