ELKHART, Ind. — A search for a missing Ohio mother of two ended in heartbreak after her body was discovered on top of a stopped train in Indiana, nearly 130 miles from where she was last seen.
Brittany Ritter, 37, of Holland, Ohio, was found by a Norfolk Southern Railway employee in a train yard in Elkhart, Indiana, on September 3, according to the Elkhart Police Department.
Ritter had been reported missing after she was last seen in the Holland area during the early morning hours of September 2. The Lucas County Sheriff’s Office said her family was concerned for her welfare after they were unable to get in touch with her.
Authorities said Ritter may have been traveling by bicycle around the time she disappeared.
The discovery of her body in Indiana the following morning raised immediate questions about how she traveled such a significant distance and what happened before her death.
Train Had Traveled From the East
According to authorities, Ritter’s body was discovered on top of a train that had left from the east and traveled west. The circumstances surrounding how she ended up on the train remain unclear.
The Elkhart County Homicide Unit initially investigated Ritter’s death after her body was discovered. The case was later turned over to the Lucas County Sheriff’s Office in Ohio, which is continuing to investigate. Officials have not publicly explained why Ritter was in Indiana or how she came to be on top of the train.
Those unanswered questions have left Ritter’s family seeking clarity as they deal with the devastating loss.
Family Remembers Mother of Two
Ritter was described by her loved ones as a proud mother of two sons and a beloved member of her family and community.
A GoFundMe fundraiser established to help cover her funeral expenses said Ritter had struggled with mental health challenges but emphasized that those who knew her recognized her strength and valued her life.
The fundraiser described her as a mother, daughter, sister, aunt and friend, underscoring the number of people now mourning her death.
Her family has also asked for continued support as investigators work to establish what happened.
Ritter’s aunt, Sherry Straub-Guess, thanked the people who joined the search for Ritter and helped spread information about her disappearance.
In a Facebook post, Straub-Guess said the family was continuing to seek the truth about what happened.
“Brittany has been found. It is not the outcome we had hoped for but she is now forever home,” Straub-Guess wrote.
Search Ends With Heartbreaking Discovery
The search for Ritter had brought community members together as people shared information and looked for her after she disappeared.
Straub-Guess thanked those who participated in the search, writing, “It takes a village and this past weekend we had that village of people looking for Britt!”
That support became especially meaningful after authorities confirmed Ritter had been found dead.
The circumstances remain difficult to understand, particularly because her body was discovered far from Holland, Ohio, where she was last seen.
Investigators have not released details about whether Ritter’s disappearance and death involved any criminal activity.
Cause of Death Still Unknown
Authorities have not yet released Ritter’s cause or manner of death. The Elkhart medical examiner had not immediately responded to a request for comment, according to the report.
The Lucas County Sheriff’s Office said it is still investigating Ritter’s death and declined to provide additional details.
