NEW YORK — New York’s coastal waters delivered an extraordinary surprise Monday when a group of boaters encountered two enormous whale sharks swimming near the surface.
The unexpected sighting happened during an American Princess Cruises adventure departing from Brooklyn. Those aboard were cruising through the ocean, observing Shearwater birds and scooping up floating sargassum when they suddenly came across the massive marine animals.
One of the whale sharks was captured on camera, giving observers a remarkable look at the world’s largest fish moving through waters where many people would not expect to see one.
The encounter quickly stood out because whale sharks are generally associated with warmer tropical and temperate seas.
Yet these giant fish are capable of traveling much farther north than many people realize.

The enormous size of whale sharks can make them look intimidating. These fish can grow to around 40 feet long and weigh up to 20,000 pounds, making them the largest fish species in the world.
They also have thousands of tiny teeth—around 3,000, according to the information provided by the U.S. Department of the Interior.
But their appearance can be misleading.
Whale sharks are filter feeders, meaning they consume tiny organisms and other small prey rather than hunting large animals.
Instead of using their size to attack prey, they swim through the water with their huge mouths open, allowing food-filled water to pass through their gills.
“They feed by swimming with their mouths open or creating a giant suction, gathering food from the water as it passes through their gills,” the U.S. Department of the Interior said.
That diet makes the whale shark one of the ocean’s most fascinating examples of how enormous size does not necessarily mean an aggressive nature.
Whale Sharks Are Known as Gentle Giants
Despite their enormous bodies, whale sharks are generally described as gentle giants. They are not known for attacking humans, and their filter-feeding behavior means people are not their natural prey.
Their size alone can be startling when one appears near a boat, but the animals are typically focused on feeding and traveling through the ocean.
The sighting off New York therefore provided an unusual combination: one of the world’s largest fish appearing in waters near one of America’s most populated coastal regions.
