PENSACOLA, Fla. — A routine diving trip off Florida’s Emerald Coast turned into a life-threatening emergency Tuesday when a 40-year-old man was attacked by a shark roughly 30 nautical miles offshore.
The attack happened in waters south of Pensacola, far from the immediate safety of the shoreline. According to the U.S. Coast Guard, officials received a distress call shortly before 5 p.m. reporting that a diver had been attacked.
The man sustained injuries that resulted in significant blood loss, but he remained conscious following the encounter.
Despite being injured and far offshore, the diver was able to make his way back to his boat. That decision gave rescuers an opportunity to intercept the vessel and begin transporting him toward medical care.
Coast Guard Launches Rescue Boat
Once the Coast Guard received word of the attack, Coast Guard Station Pensacola launched a 45-foot response boat to reach the injured diver.
The rescue crew traveled offshore and met the man’s vessel approximately 5.5 nautical miles south of Pensacola Pass, the waterway connecting Pensacola Bay with the Gulf of Mexico.
The injured diver was transferred to the Coast Guard response boat, which had three EMTs aboard. The quick handoff allowed medical personnel to begin assisting the man while he was transported toward shore.
Officials said the diver remained conscious after the attack, despite suffering injuries that caused blood loss.
The Coast Guard’s response was critical because the initial attack occurred roughly 30 nautical miles from the coast, leaving a significant distance between the injured man and emergency medical facilities.
Injured Diver Taken to Naval Air Station Pensacola
After the Coast Guard response vessel reached the area, rescuers transported the injured man to Naval Air Station Pensacola.
A medical helicopter was waiting at the base, allowing the diver to be transferred quickly for additional emergency treatment. From there, he was airlifted to Sacred Heart Hospital, where he could receive specialized medical care.
The entire response involved coordination between the diver’s boat, Coast Guard personnel, EMTs and the medical helicopter crew.
Officials have not immediately released additional details about the man’s injuries or his condition following the hospital transfer.
Shark Attack Happens Miles From Shore
The location of the attack highlights how challenging offshore emergencies can become.
The diver was approximately 30 nautical miles from Pensacola when the shark attack occurred. At that distance, getting an injured person back to shore requires a coordinated maritime and medical response.
The diver’s ability to return to his boat after the attack was an important part of the rescue effort.
Rather than remaining in the water, he was able to get himself back aboard the vessel and wait for help while the Coast Guard response team traveled to meet him.
The Coast Guard later transferred him to its response boat, where EMTs were able to provide assistance during the journey back toward Pensacola.

The diver was conscious following the attack, but officials have not provided a detailed update on his medical condition.
The U.S. Coast Guard confirmed that his injuries resulted in blood loss, while local reports described the bleeding as significant. The extent of the wounds and whether he suffered any additional complications have not been publicly released.
The man was taken to Sacred Heart Hospital after being airlifted from Naval Air Station Pensacola. As of the latest available reports, authorities had not released information identifying the diver.
Dramatic Rescue Brings Diver to Safety
The incident serves as another reminder of the risks that can arise during offshore activities, where even a serious injury can quickly become an emergency because of the distance from land.
In this case, the diver was able to get back onto his boat after the shark attack, while the Coast Guard mobilized a rescue vessel and EMTs.
