SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. — A routine garbage collection route turned into a dramatic rescue early Wednesday morning after a bystander heard screams coming from inside a garbage truck and realized someone was trapped beneath the load.
The San Francisco Fire Department was alerted at approximately 4:11 a.m. on Sept. 2 after a person nearby heard a man shouting inside a Recology garbage truck.
The truck driver had already made the first stop on the route and compacted the trash once. But before the next load could be emptied, the nearby person heard the desperate calls and alerted the driver.
The driver immediately shut off the vehicle and listened. He then heard someone screaming for help from inside the truck.
What followed was a race against time as firefighters worked to reach the trapped man without putting him in even greater danger.
Firefighters Dig Through Trash for More Than Two Hours
Officials determined it would be unsafe to simply dump the truck’s contents.
Instead, approximately 25 San Francisco firefighters began manually digging through the garbage to locate and free the man. The rescue operation lasted more than two hours.
San Francisco Fire Department public information officer Capt. Mariano Elias said the victim remained conscious and was able to communicate with rescuers throughout the ordeal.
“I personally heard him yell a few times,” Elias said. He added that he could not tell whether the man’s cries were caused by pain or frustration.
Despite being trapped beneath a substantial amount of garbage, the man remained awake and oriented while firefighters carefully worked toward him.
The slow process was necessary because removing the trash too quickly could have created additional risks for the victim.
Paramedics Worked to Prevent Serious Complications
While firefighters continued digging, paramedics were also working to protect the trapped man from a potentially dangerous medical condition known as crush syndrome.
Emergency personnel were able to reach the man’s arm and establish an intravenous line.
Crush syndrome can occur when prolonged pressure on muscles causes significant tissue damage. When the pressure is released, damaged muscle tissue can release substances into the bloodstream that may lead to organ problems and dangerous electrolyte abnormalities.
That made the rescue especially delicate.

The victim needed to be freed, but medical crews also had to prepare for complications that could occur after he was released from the pressure of the garbage.
Firefighters continued working until they were finally able to safely remove him.
Man Rescued Before 7 a.m.
The rescue was completed before 7 a.m., several hours after the emergency response began. Officials said the man was awake and oriented when he was removed from the truck.
He was transported to Zuckerberg San Francisco General Hospital, where he was listed in serious condition, according to a hospital spokesperson cited by The San Francisco Standard.
While his injuries and medical condition were serious enough to require hospitalization, firefighters’ ability to reach him while he remained conscious gave the rescue operation a positive outcome.
Elias described the circumstances surrounding how the man ended up inside the truck as unfortunate.
Man Was First Inside a Dumpster
According to Elias, the man was initially inside a dumpster before the container was emptied into the garbage truck. It is unclear why he entered the dumpster.
Elias said people sometimes enter dumpsters to sleep, search through discarded items or look for food, although authorities have not confirmed the man’s specific reason.
“It’s an unfortunate situation to lead someone to go into a dumpster,” Elias said, while emphasizing the positive outcome that the man survived.
The situation could have ended very differently if the bystander had not heard the screams or if the truck had continued along its route.
The person’s decision to alert the driver ultimately triggered the emergency response that brought firefighters to the scene.
Rare Rescue Highlights Hidden Dangers
Recology spokesperson Robert Reed described the incident as “pretty unusual.” According to Reed, the company had not experienced a similar incident in approximately 15 years.
The unusual rescue nevertheless highlights how dangerous it can be for someone to enter a dumpster without knowing when it may be emptied.
For the firefighters involved, the priority was getting the trapped man out safely while medical teams monitored him throughout the painstaking rescue.
The man’s identity has not been released, and authorities have not disclosed additional details about why he entered the dumpster.
What is known is that a bystander heard cries for help at the right moment, a driver stopped the truck, and dozens of firefighters spent hours digging through its contents to bring the trapped man to safety.
