Yolo County, CA — A 7-day-old newborn was found living beneath an Interstate 5 freeway overpass with his parents inside a makeshift tent surrounded by suspected drug paraphernalia, garbage and other hazardous conditions, according to the Yolo County Sheriff’s Office.
Deputies responded on September 9 after receiving a tip about a man and woman reportedly living beneath the I-5 overpass near County Road 19A with their newborn baby.
When deputies arrived, they found 48-year-old Fernando Esparza, 29-year-old Melissa Rivera and their 7-day-old infant inside a makeshift tent directly underneath the freeway.
Authorities immediately removed the newborn from the area because of concerns about the child’s safety.
Baby taken to hospital for evaluation
The infant was first assessed by medics from American Medical Response (AMR) and taken to Woodland Memorial Hospital, according to authorities.
The newborn was later transported to a Sacramento County neonatal intensive care unit for additional evaluation.
Detectives and Child Welfare Services also responded to investigate the baby’s living conditions and determine the circumstances surrounding the child’s care.
According to investigators, the environment around the tent presented multiple hazards to a newborn.
Deputies describe hazardous conditions
Inside and around the makeshift tent, investigators documented what the sheriff’s office described as hazardous living conditions.
Authorities reported finding numerous suspected methamphetamine smoking pipes, accumulated trash and rotten food.
The sleeping arrangements were also described as unsuitable. Investigators said the family was sleeping on a dirt floor without bedding.
Deputies reportedly found vomit on a mattress and feces inside a baby carrier.
Investigators also discovered the mother’s placenta and umbilical cord inside a nearby garbage bag, according to the sheriff’s office.
The location beneath the freeway created another concern. Investigators said the newborn was exposed to “extremely loud noise” from traffic passing overhead.
Parents reportedly acknowledged dangers
Authorities said Esparza and Rivera acknowledged the dangers posed to their newborn.
According to the sheriff’s office, the parents said they had been waiting to take the baby to a hospital for an examination at a later date.
With deputies and child welfare officials determining that the infant faced an immediate safety concern, authorities placed the newborn into protective custody.
The case has since prompted reactions online, with people debating both the baby’s removal and the circumstances faced by the parents.
One commenter wrote, “Wild to me you’ll help the baby but not the parents, we live in a backwards society.”
Another person expressed sympathy for the mother while supporting the baby’s removal, writing, “This is so sad. That woman is living through hell. Thank God the baby was saved from that and will hopefully have a safe life ahead.”

Parents arrested on child endangerment suspicion
Following the investigation, Esparza and Rivera were arrested on suspicion of child endangerment. Both were booked into the Yolo County Jail, according to authorities.
The newborn remained under protective care while officials investigated the child’s welfare and evaluated the circumstances surrounding the family.
