Yulee, FL — A routine shoplifting investigation at a Target store has turned into a much larger retail theft case after Nassau County detectives allegedly uncovered a multi-county operation targeting high-value LEGO sets across Northeast Florida.
According to the Nassau County Sheriff’s Office, investigators began looking into repeated thefts at the Target on State Road 200 in Yulee. Authorities said Ronald Lorne Tipton was identified as a suspect after allegedly loading shopping carts with LEGO merchandise and fleeing through emergency exit doors to waiting getaway vehicles.
Investigators said the alleged thefts occurred on Aug. 18, Aug. 26 and the following Saturday, with detectives working to determine the full scope of the operation.
The investigation took another dramatic turn Monday when Tipton was reportedly spotted entering a Walmart on State Road 200.
Suspect allegedly flees with LEGO sets
According to NCSO, Tipton entered the Walmart and selected 12 LEGO sets before asset protection staff confronted him.
An investigator later located Tipton driving a U-Haul truck nearby, authorities said. As Tipton allegedly attempted to get away, police said he struck the detective’s arm with the open truck door.
The confrontation quickly escalated into a vehicle pursuit through Fernandina Beach. Deputies followed the U-Haul until the chase ended near Sadler Road, where a deputy reportedly pinned the truck against a tree in a CVS parking lot.
Tipton and a second suspect, Jessica Underwood, were arrested, according to authorities.
Deputies say drugs were found inside U-Haul
The investigation then produced another major discovery. According to the sheriff’s office, deputies searching the U-Haul recovered suspected methamphetamine, crack cocaine and fentanyl from the passenger-side floorboard.
Authorities also connected Tipton to stolen merchandise valued at more than $3,000 in Nassau County.
Investigators said the suspected thefts appeared to extend beyond Yulee, with total losses across Northeast Florida estimated at more than $20,000.
However, authorities have not disclosed the full extent of the alleged operation or confirmed whether additional people were involved.
Where the stolen LEGO merchandise went remains unclear
One major question remains unanswered: where the stolen merchandise was allegedly being resold. Officials have not publicly identified a resale operation or explained how the LEGO sets were being distributed after the reported thefts.
Authorities also have not confirmed whether the investigation could result in additional arrests as detectives continue examining suspected thefts across the region.
The case illustrates how investigators can sometimes connect individual retail theft reports to a broader pattern after reviewing surveillance footage, suspect movements and evidence from multiple incidents.

Nassau County Sheriff Bill Leeper credited investigators and neighboring law enforcement agencies with helping track the suspected operation.

“What may start as a single retail theft can sometimes uncover something much bigger,” Leeper said. “Our detectives followed the evidence, connected the dots and worked with our law enforcement partners to put a suspect involved in these thefts behind bars.”
The investigation involved activity across multiple locations in Northeast Florida, making cooperation between agencies an important part of the case.
Tipton faces multiple charges
Tipton faces several charges stemming from the investigation and the subsequent pursuit.
According to authorities, those charges include aggravated battery on a law enforcement officer, aggravated fleeing with injury or damage, coordinating others in retail theft over $3,000, dealing in stolen property, possession of controlled substances and driving under the influence.
Underwood was also booked on unrelated drug charges, according to the sheriff’s office. Prosecutors are expected to handle formal court proceedings involving the two suspects.
