BAKERSFIELD, Calif. — A high school football game in Bakersfield ended in tragedy Friday night when 17-year-old Levi Brown was shot and killed just minutes after the season-opening game began.
Brown was attending the game at Independence High School when a fight broke out outside the inner chain-link fence surrounding the football field. Shortly afterward, gunfire erupted.
Police officers arrived shortly after 8 p.m. and found Brown suffering from gunshot wounds. He was rushed to Kern Medical Hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.
The shooting shocked the Bakersfield community and prompted police to move quickly to prevent additional violence.
Police Arrest Seven as Gang Violence Fears Grow
Authorities initially arrested an unidentified 15-year-old on suspicion of murder and gang activity following Brown’s death. Then, on Monday, police announced the arrests of six additional people, including three teenagers.
Bakersfield police said the arrests were part of an effort to head off possible retaliatory gang violence following the shooting.
However, investigators made an important distinction: none of the six people arrested Monday were directly connected to Brown’s killing, according to police.
Bakersfield Police Chief Brent Stratton said the ages of those arrested reflect a troubling pattern seen in gang-related shootings.
“The age range really isn’t any different from what we see a lot of other times as well,” Stratton said. “This is the unfortunate reality that people involved in gang shootings are oftentimes about this age.”
The arrests come as authorities attempt to prevent another shooting or confrontation from following Brown’s death.
Community Gathers to Remember Teen Football Star
While police worked to prevent further violence, Brown’s friends, mentors and community members gathered Monday night for a vigil honoring his life.
The gathering featured prayer and music as mourners remembered a teenager described as talented, ambitious and deeply loved.
Brown’s former coach, Vince Carter, said he believed the young athlete had a bright future ahead of him.
“He was an ‘exceptional athlete’ who had ‘all the talent in the world,’” Carter said. Carter also expressed his belief that Brown could have continued playing football at the collegiate level.
“There’s no doubt in my mind, he would have been a college football athlete,” Carter said.
For those who knew Brown through sports, his death represented the loss of a young athlete whose potential had barely begun to be realized.
Mentors Remember Brown’s Goals and Future
Manuel Carrizalez, founder and director of Stay Focused Ministries, knew Brown through the organization’s work with teenagers and students.
Carrizalez said he had spoken with Brown only a couple of weeks before the shooting.
“He was a great kid. He had a lot of goals, and he was looking towards his future,” Carrizalez told a local news outlet.
Carrizalez also used Brown’s death as a warning about the choices young people can face as they grow up.
“They were never made to be gang members; they were never made to be drug addicts,” he said.
He added that young people eventually have to make difficult decisions about who they associate with and what they become involved in.
Brown’s death has made that message even more urgent for community leaders trying to steer teenagers away from gangs and violence.
Teen Leaves Behind One-Year-Old Daughter
Beyond his athletic talent and future ambitions, Brown was also a father. The 17-year-old leaves behind a one-year-old daughter, adding another layer of heartbreak for those mourning his death.
The shooting occurred only minutes into the football game, turning what should have been a night of school spirit and competition into a crime scene.
As the investigation continues, police are working to determine the circumstances surrounding the shooting and identify everyone involved.
At the same time, authorities are trying to prevent the killing from triggering additional gang-related violence in Bakersfield.
For Brown’s family, teammates, coaches and mentors, the focus remains on remembering a young man they say had goals, talent and a promising future before his life was suddenly cut short.
