BRYN MAWR-SKYWAY, Wash. — A late-night shooting south of Seattle has claimed the life of a 29-year-old Coast Guard lieutenant, leaving his family, friends and fellow service members searching for answers.
The shooting happened around 12:40 a.m. on Aug. 23 in Bryn Mawr-Skyway, approximately 11 miles south of downtown Seattle, according to reports citing the King County Sheriff’s Office.
When deputies arrived at the scene, they found a man suffering from a gunshot wound. Officers and others at the scene provided first aid, but the victim died there.
The King County Medical Examiner’s Office later identified the victim as Connor Scott Overstreet, determining that he died from a gunshot wound to the chest.
The King County Sheriff’s Office is now investigating the death as a homicide.
Connor Overstreet Served With Coast Guard in California
Coast Guard officials confirmed Overstreet’s death to local media, saying he was an active-duty member stationed at Coast Guard Air Station Ventura in Southern California.
The U.S. Coast Guard Pacific Area expressed its grief following the lieutenant’s death.
“The Coast Guard is deeply saddened to confirm the death of LT Connor Overstreet, an active-duty member at Coast Guard Air Station Ventura, following an incident in the Seattle area,” the agency said.
Officials also extended condolences to Overstreet’s family, friends and fellow service members during what they described as a tragic time.
Overstreet was a native of Reno, Nevada, according to the Coast Guard.
His death has now left those who knew him mourning a young service member whose life was cut short while investigators work to determine who was responsible.
Family Says Shooting Appeared Random
A verified GoFundMe established by Overstreet’s loved ones says the Coast Guard lieutenant was killed in a drive-by shooting.
His family has told local media that they believe Overstreet was the victim of a random act of violence.
The circumstances surrounding the shooting remain unclear, and authorities have not publicly identified a suspect or announced a motive.
Investigators are expected to rely on witness accounts and other evidence as they work to reconstruct what happened in the early-morning hours.

Fundraiser Seeks Reward Money for Information
Overstreet’s family and loved ones are now trying to help investigators locate the person or people responsible.
The GoFundMe campaign is being organized in coordination with CrimeStoppers, with the primary goal of creating a reward for information that results in an arrest and conviction.
The fundraiser explains that the reward is intended to encourage anyone who may have information about the shooting to come forward.
“Funds collected will be primarily used to incentivize a reward for the collection of information that leads to arresting and charging the individual/s responsible for this atrocious act,” the fundraiser states.
The family acknowledged that no amount of money can reflect the value of Overstreet’s life, but said the reward could help support the investigation and potentially encourage a witness to provide information.
Family Hopes Someone Comes Forward
According to the fundraiser, any money remaining after the reward effort will be used to help ease the financial burden on the Overstreet family following the tragedy.
If funds remain beyond those needs, the family says they may be donated to a charity that Connor would have supported.
Meanwhile, investigators continue working to identify the suspect and establish exactly what led to the shooting.
The case has left a Coast Guard family grieving a young officer who was serving his country and whose life ended unexpectedly in Washington.
Authorities are asking anyone with information about the shooting to come forward as the homicide investigation continues.
