Laguna Beach, CA — An anniversary celebration took a devastating turn in August 2022 when a California couple walking through a marked crosswalk was struck by a vehicle, killing the husband and leaving his wife with minor injuries.
The victim, 60-year-old Stanley Jonathan Arthur Isaacs, suffered catastrophic injuries in the crash and later died, according to city officials and prosecutors.
Isaacs and his wife were walking in a marked and lit crosswalk on Aug. 11, 2022, when a vehicle driven by Sysillia Morrison Montes De Oca crashed into them, according to an initial statement from Laguna Beach officials.
His wife survived the collision with minor injuries and was released from the hospital.
Montes De Oca was arrested soon after the crash and has since been convicted in connection with Isaacs’ death.
Prosecutors reveal what happened before impact
The investigation into the crash uncovered a disturbing detail about the moments immediately before the collision.
According to prosecutors and reports, Montes De Oca told people inside the vehicle shortly before the crash that she would “speed up.”
The vehicle then struck Isaacs and his wife as they were crossing the street.
Deputy District Attorney Justin Kim described the injuries Isaacs suffered as particularly severe. He sustained “internal decapitation,” a fractured skull, a spinal fracture and “smashed ribs,” according to reports citing the prosecutor.
Isaacs was thrown into the air by the force of the collision.
What followed the crash would become another major part of the investigation.
Driver returned and searched for deadly hit-and-runs
After the collision, Montes De Oca allegedly left the scene before returning with a friend, according to prosecutors.
Deputy District Attorney Kim said she later searched online for deadly hit-and-runs, adding another troubling detail to the case.
Her vehicle was eventually discovered inside a parking garage.
Montes De Oca ultimately turned herself in to authorities, bringing an end to the immediate search for the driver involved in the fatal crash.
The case, however, continued for more than four years as prosecutors pursued charges related to Isaacs’ death and the alleged hit-and-run.
Family remembers beloved husband and grandfather
While the criminal case moved through the courts, Isaacs’ family remembered him for the joy he brought to those around him.

His online obituary described him as a beloved father, grandfather and husband, praising his personality and the happiness he brought to his family and community.
A tribute said Isaacs’ “smile transcended this world” and described his dance moves as unparalleled. He was also remembered for his love of trains and for a holiday tradition that brought happiness to his neighborhood.
According to the obituary, Isaacs spent every holiday season creating Santa’s Winter Wonderland for the community, spreading Christmas cheer to neighbors, friends and, especially, his seven grandchildren.
Those memories offered a stark contrast to the violent circumstances surrounding his death.
Driver convicted and awaiting sentencing
Montes De Oca was convicted last week of gross vehicular manslaughter, hit-and-run with permanent and serious injury, and failing to stop at a hit-and-run involving injury or death.
Her conviction came more than four years after the crash that ended Isaacs’ life. She is scheduled to be sentenced in November, according to the reports.
For Isaacs’ family, the case has brought a measure of legal accountability after years of waiting. But the circumstances of his death — while he and his wife were simply walking through a crosswalk during an anniversary outing — remain a painful part of his story.
The crash not only ended the life of a husband, father and grandfather but also left behind a community member remembered for turning his love of the holidays into a tradition for others.
