BOCA GRANDE KEY, Fla. — A recreational swim in the waters off Boca Grande Key turned into an emergency Sunday evening after a mariner was reportedly bitten by a shark on the leg.
The incident happened at approximately 5 p.m. on Aug. 23, according to the U.S. Coast Guard Southeast. The mariner was swimming near a recreational vessel when the reported shark bite occurred. The Coast Guard was notified about the injured swimmer and responded to help coordinate the rescue.
While the situation involved a serious marine injury, the mariner quickly received assistance from people already nearby.
Nurses Provide Immediate Medical Care
According to the Coast Guard, nurses happened to be on Boca Grande Key when the incident occurred. The medical professionals provided care to the mariner after the reported shark bite, which affected the person’s lower leg.
Their presence on the island meant the injured swimmer could receive medical attention before being transported to a location where emergency medical services could take over.
The mariner was subsequently taken aboard a Good Samaritan’s vessel, providing an important link in the rescue effort.
The combination of nearby medical professionals, a Good Samaritan vessel and responding Coast Guard personnel helped move the injured swimmer toward additional emergency care.
Good Samaritan Vessel Helps Bring Swimmer to Safety
After receiving initial treatment, the mariner remained aboard the Good Samaritan’s vessel as the rescue operation continued.
A Station Key West boat crew escorted the vessel to Station Key West, according to the Coast Guard.
The response allowed the mariner to be transported from the area around Boca Grande Key toward waiting emergency medical personnel.
The Coast Guard’s role was especially important in getting the injured swimmer safely to the station, where a handoff to EMS could take place.

EMS Waiting at Station Key West
By the time the mariner reached Station Key West, emergency medical services were waiting on the station’s pier.
EMS personnel were prepared to take over care and provide any additional treatment the mariner needed. The Coast Guard said the mariner was stable when transferred to EMS.
