GLENDALE, Calif. — Police are investigating after offensive flyers targeting the Armenian community were recently found near Glenoaks Elementary School, prompting concerns about intimidation and hate-related activity in the community.
The Glendale Police Department announced the investigation Friday, saying officers are treating the incident as a hate incident because of the language directed at Armenians.
Authorities have not disclosed exactly what was written or shown on the flyers. Police also have not said how many flyers were found or precisely when they were placed in the area.
The discovery near an elementary school has added to concerns surrounding the incident as investigators work to determine who distributed the material and why.
Glendale Police Treat Flyers as Hate Incident
According to Glendale police, the flyers contained language specifically directed against members of the Armenian community.
“The flyers contain derogatory language specifically targeting the Armenian community, and we are treating this matter as a hate incident,” the department said.
Police have emphasized that the classification as a hate incident does not necessarily mean a criminal charge will follow.
Investigators are still determining whether the material and circumstances surrounding its distribution could meet the requirements for a prosecutable criminal offense.
At the same time, officers are working to identify possible suspects and understand the motive behind the flyers.
The investigation could depend on information from people who saw the flyers being distributed, surveillance footage from nearby locations or other evidence that could help establish who was responsible.
Police Say Glendale Will Not Ignore Intimidation
