DIAMOND BAR, Calif. — A California caregiver who was supposed to help protect vulnerable nursing home residents will spend the rest of his life behind bars after being convicted of murdering two elderly women at an assisted living facility.
Jianchun Li, 44, was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole after prosecutors said he killed two residents at Happy Homes Care in Diamond Bar in June 2023.
The victims were identified as Monica Moon Lee, 75, and Hee Sook Park, 83.
According to prosecutors, both women were killed inside the facility’s bathroom, with the murders occurring just 30 minutes apart. Li was working an overnight shift at the facility when the killings occurred.
Two Women Killed in Same Bathroom
Prosecutors said Li first took Lee, who used a walker and had dementia, into the bathroom shortly before 7 a.m.
According to the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office, Li placed a plastic bag over Lee’s head, wrapped electrical tape around her neck and strangled her.
About half an hour later, prosecutors said Li brought Park into the same bathroom. She was allegedly killed in the same manner. Emergency responders eventually arrived at the facility, where both women were pronounced dead at the scene.
The closely timed killings became a central part of the prosecution’s case against Li, particularly because investigators said the same method was used against both residents.
Jury Rejects Insanity Defense
The case continued through the court system for several years before Li was ultimately held responsible for the killings.
A Los Angeles County jury convicted Li of both murders on August 20.
The legal proceedings did not end with the murder convictions. Jurors were also asked to consider Li’s defense that he was not guilty by reason of insanity.
A week after the murder convictions, the jury rejected that defense and determined that Li was sane at the time of the killings. The finding cleared the way for the severe sentence imposed after his conviction.
District Attorney Nathan J. Hochman said the case was particularly disturbing because Li was the person entrusted with caring for the women.
DA Says Victims Were Betrayed by Caregiver
Hochman condemned the killings and emphasized the vulnerability of the two victims.
“Three years ago, Monica Moon Lee and Hee Sook Park’s lives were brutally taken by Jianchun Li, the very person expected to keep them safe,” Hochman said. He thanked the jury for holding Li accountable and finding him sane when he decided to kill the two women.
The district attorney also expressed hope that the verdict would provide some relief to the victims’ families and the Diamond Bar community.
“We hope this verdict brings a measure of closure to the victims’ loved ones and the Diamond Bar community,” Hochman said. “Justice was served and Li will be held fully accountable for his horrific and senseless crimes.”
Life Prison Sentence Brings Case to Close
With the sentencing, Li will remain in prison for life without the possibility of parole, meaning he will not be eligible for release from the sentence through the normal parole process.
The case has left a lasting impact because the victims were residents of a facility where they were expected to receive care and protection.
Lee, who had dementia and relied on a walker, and Park were both among the residents entrusted to the assisted living facility.
Instead, prosecutors said, Li used his position during an overnight shift to take both women into a bathroom and kill them.
The two murders happened within a remarkably short period, with only about 30 minutes separating the deaths, according to prosecutors.
For the victims’ loved ones and the Diamond Bar community, Li’s life-without-parole sentence now marks the conclusion of a case involving the deaths of two vulnerable women who were supposed to be in a place of safety.
