California Boater Dies While Trying to Rescue His Dog From Shasta Lake as Nearby Witness Rushes to Help

SHASTA COUNTY, Calif. — A morning outing on Shasta Lake turned into a heartbreaking tragedy after a California man entered the water in an attempt to save his dog and ultimately lost his life.

Geordan White, 60, of Redding, was aboard a boat on the lake Friday morning when his dog unexpectedly jumped into the water, according to the Shasta County Sheriff’s Office.

White immediately went into the lake after his pet. The incident unfolded at approximately 9 a.m. near the Bailey Cove Boat Launch, where a person aboard a nearby vessel noticed what was happening and contacted 911.

What began as an effort to save a beloved pet quickly became an emergency involving White himself.

Nearby Boater Tries to Save Struggling Man

After entering the water, White began struggling.

The nearby boater who had called 911 attempted to help by throwing a flotation device toward him. The effort gave White an opportunity to stay above the water while rescuers were being contacted.

However, according to authorities, White was unable to maintain his grip on the flotation device. He eventually vanished beneath the surface of Shasta Lake.

Emergency personnel responded to the area as the search for White continued. A dive team was later called in to search beneath the water for the missing man.

The situation remained especially urgent because every moment mattered after White disappeared from view.

Dive Team Recovers White From Lake

A dive team eventually located White and recovered his body from Shasta Lake. Authorities have not released additional details about exactly how long the search lasted or what happened in the moments immediately before White disappeared beneath the surface.

An autopsy is expected to help determine the exact cause of death.

The sheriff’s office has not indicated that foul play was suspected, and investigators have not released further information about the circumstances surrounding the fatal incident. While White did not survive, the dog he had entered the water to rescue did.

Dog Survives After 911 Caller Pulls It From Water

The dog was ultimately rescued from the water by the same 911 caller, according to the Shasta County Sheriff’s Office.

The survival of the animal adds another emotional layer to the tragedy. White had entered the lake after seeing his dog in distress, but his attempt to save it ended with his own death.

The department also encouraged people enjoying the lake to always wear personal flotation devices while on the water. The reminder is particularly important because entering open water to assist another person or animal can quickly place the rescuer in danger as well.
