Bronx, NY—In Mount Eden in The Bronx, a routine trip toward school turned frightening Monday morning when a 17-year-old student was attacked in front of his mother, according to police and sources.
The teen and his mother were heading toward the William H. Taft High School Educational Campus on East 172nd Street near Sheridan Avenue at around 9:30 a.m. when two suspects allegedly ambushed him.
According to authorities, one of the attackers struck the teenager while the other stabbed him in the buttocks.
The student had reportedly been on his way to register for classes, but instead of beginning his school day, he was taken to Harlem Hospital for treatment. Authorities said he was listed in stable condition.
The two suspects remained at large, with police continuing to investigate the attack.
The incident was only the first of several troubling school-related incidents reported across New York City on Monday.
Staten Island student arrested with loaded gun
Less than an hour after the Bronx stabbing, police were dealing with another alarming incident at a New York City high school.
On Staten Island, an 18-year-old student at Curtis High School was arrested after school safety officers intervened in a fight involving him and another student.
The confrontation happened at the school on Hamilton Avenue in the St. George neighborhood at about 10:20 a.m., according to authorities and sources.
After the fight was broken up, officers discovered that the teenager, identified as Samuel Owusu, was carrying a gun inside his backpack.
Police said the firearm was loaded, with bullets in the cartridge.
Authorities said the teen did not pull out the gun during the fight, but he was still taken into custody and faced multiple gun-possession charges. He was also charged with unlawful possession of cannabis, according to police.
The discovery added another layer of concern to a day that had already begun with violence involving a student on his way to school.
Another gun found at Queens School
By the afternoon, another school in the city had become the scene of a separate weapons incident.
At the Queens School for Career Development on Linden Boulevard near 143rd Street in South Jamaica, a 17-year-old student was passing through a security scanner when the device detected a weapon inside his backpack.
Police took the student into custody after the gun was discovered.
Authorities said it was not immediately clear whether the weapon was loaded. By Monday evening, the teenager had not yet been charged, according to police.
The Queens incident marked the third reported case involving a student and a weapon in the city within the same day.
