DULUTH, Minn. — A routine argument over garbage allegedly escalated into a violent stabbing in Duluth, leaving a man with a chest wound and a collapsed lung, according to police.
The incident came to light late on Aug. 13, when officers with the Duluth Police Department responded to the emergency room at Aspirus St. Luke’s Hospital at about 10:20 p.m. Medical staff had reported that a patient had arrived after being stabbed.
When officers encountered the 39-year-old victim, police said he was covered in blood from a stab wound to his chest.
Despite the severity of his injuries, the man had reportedly been able to walk himself to the hospital for treatment. Medical personnel later determined that he had suffered a collapsed lung, and he was admitted to the intensive care unit.
The victim told investigators that he knew the person who allegedly attacked him and identified him as Travis Shockley, 38.
Garbage Argument Allegedly Leads to Stabbing
According to a criminal complaint, the confrontation reportedly began near a home in Duluth.
The victim told police that he had thrown garbage into Shockley’s car. That apparently angered Shockley, and what began as an argument allegedly turned into a physical attack.
Police say Shockley allegedly pulled out a knife and stabbed the man in the chest.
The victim was then able to make his way to the nearby hospital, where medical staff treated his injuries and notified authorities.
The circumstances described by the victim turned an apparently minor dispute involving trash into a potentially life-threatening encounter.
The two men were reportedly acquaintances, according to Minnesota-based news outlet Bring Me the News.
Police Find Suspect Days After Attack
Shockley was not arrested at the hospital scene. Instead, Duluth police located him several days later.
On Aug. 19, officers reportedly spotted Shockley riding an e-bike on West 1st Street in Duluth and attempted to stop him.
According to police, Shockley initially tried to ride away rather than immediately complying with officers’ commands. He eventually stopped and followed their orders.
Officers arrested Shockley and searched him following the encounter. Police said they found a substance in his shorts that later tested positive for methamphetamine.
The discovery added another allegation to the charges filed against him following the stabbing investigation.
Shockley Faces Multiple Charges
Shockley was charged with assault, possession of methamphetamine and fleeing an officer, according to authorities.
He is currently being held on $100,000 bond.
The allegations against Shockley remain allegations unless proven in court. A criminal charge is not itself a finding of guilt, and the case will now move through the court system.

Shockley’s next court date is scheduled for Nov. 6.
Meanwhile, the victim’s injuries highlight how quickly an argument over something as seemingly minor as garbage can escalate into serious violence.
The man reportedly arrived at the emergency room under his own power, but medical staff determined that the stabbing had caused a collapsed lung and required intensive care.
Investigation and Court Proceedings Continue
Police have not indicated whether additional details about the confrontation will emerge as the case proceeds through court.
Investigators are expected to rely on the victim’s account, evidence gathered during the investigation and any additional information available regarding the alleged stabbing.
For now, Shockley remains in custody under the $100,000 bond, while the victim’s recovery and the criminal proceedings continue.
