WAYNE COUNTY, Ohio — An ordinary Ohio home became the scene of a devastating late-night crash when a pickup truck suddenly left the roadway and plowed into the house, killing an 11-year-old boy who was inside.
Emmet Sauers, a fifth grader at Triway Local Schools, died after the crash occurred around 11:50 p.m. Friday, Sept. 4, according to authorities and local reports.
The initial investigation by the Ohio State Highway Patrol found that a white 2007 Ford F-250 had been traveling along State Route 302 when it left the road and crashed into the home.
Emmet was inside at the time.
He was pronounced dead at the scene, leaving his family, school community and neighbors facing an unimaginable loss.
Pickup Truck Leaves State Route 302
Investigators are still working to determine exactly what caused the truck to leave State Route 302. The vehicle traveled off the roadway before striking the home with enough force to cause a fatal outcome.
The driver was identified by local media as 18-year-old Karas M. Wedge. Wedge survived the crash with minor injuries and was transported to Wooster Community Hospital for treatment. Authorities have not announced a final cause for the crash, and the investigation remains ongoing.
The circumstances surrounding why the truck left the roadway are expected to remain a key part of the investigation as officials continue gathering evidence.

Triway Schools Mourns Fifth Grader
Emmet was a student at Triway Local Schools, where school officials said his death has deeply affected the entire community. Superintendent Nate Schindewolf expressed condolences to Emmet’s family, friends and everyone who knew him.
“Our deepest sympathies go out to Emmet’s family, friends, and everyone who knew and loved him,” Schindewolf said in a statement.
He described Emmet as a wonderful young man who made a positive impact on people throughout the school district.
“Emmet will be deeply missed,” the superintendent added.
The school district is now preparing to support students and staff as they process the sudden death.
Counselors Available After Tragic Death
School officials said counselors will be available for students and staff following the crash.
The sudden loss of a young classmate can be especially difficult for children, teachers and school employees who saw Emmet regularly. Schindewolf described the tragedy as a profound loss for the entire Triway community.
“This is a profound loss for our entire Triway family, and our grief is shared by all who knew Emmet,” he said.
The district plans to lean on its community as students and staff navigate the difficult days ahead.
Family Remembers Emmet’s Unique Personality
A loved one, Cynthia Vaughn, shared a tribute to Emmet on Facebook, remembering him as a sweet and kind boy who lived life in his own way.
“The life of a sweet and kind boy that lived his life unapologetically his way was snuffed out in the blink of an eye,” Vaughn wrote.
Her tribute highlighted some of the things that made Emmet special to those who loved him.
She remembered him as an 11-year-old who loved The Beatles, his lizard, crayons, Lady Liberty and, above all, his family.
Those details paint a picture of a young boy with a distinct personality and interests who was deeply connected to the people around him.
Crash Investigation Remains Underway
The Ohio State Highway Patrol continues to investigate the circumstances surrounding the deadly crash.
At this point, authorities have not publicly established what caused Wedge’s pickup truck to leave State Route 302 or why it ultimately struck the home.
The investigation will determine the factors that contributed to the collision.
For the Triway community, the investigation comes as residents and school officials mourn a child whose life was cut short at just 11 years old.
Emmet’s family is now left with memories of the boy they loved, while his classmates and teachers prepare to return to school without him.
