NACOGDOCHES, Texas — A routine welfare check at a Nacogdoches home led police to a disturbing discovery after officers reported finding three children living in conditions that posed serious concerns for their health and safety.
According to an arrest affidavit cited by a local news outlet, 28-year-old Keosha Hubbard-Woodson was arrested Aug. 9 after Nacogdoches police went to the home on EJ Campbell Boulevard to check on the children.
Hubbard-Woodson, who was identified as the children’s “caregiver” in a police report was subsequently charged with three counts of endangering a child.
The investigation began when officers arrived at the residence at about 5:25 p.m. for the welfare check.
Police Reportedly Find Children Living Without Basic Necessities
What officers encountered inside the residence raised immediate concerns.
According to the affidavit, the home had no running water and contained what authorities described as an “extreme amount of trash.” Officers also reported finding human or animal feces, rotting food and a significant insect infestation.
The children reportedly did not have access to suitable living or sleeping quarters, meaning they lacked appropriate places to live and sleep inside the home.
Their physical appearance also concerned investigators. The children were reportedly wearing visibly soiled clothing when officers found them.
The conditions described in the affidavit went beyond general clutter or an untidy home. Investigators documented multiple issues that they believed created an unsafe environment for the children.
Children Showed Signs of Untreated Medical Problems
Officers also reported seeing signs that the children had medical conditions that had not received appropriate treatment.
According to the affidavit, the children showed visible skin conditions and severe stomach pain. Emergency medical services were called to the residence to provide treatment for the children.
The discovery of the children’s living conditions and apparent health concerns prompted further intervention. After Hubbard-Woodson’s arrest, Child Protective Services took custody of the three children.
The immediate focus shifted to making sure the children received medical attention and were removed from the environment described by investigators.
Mother Remains in Jail Without Bond
Hubbard-Woodson was arrested on Aug. 9 and charged with three counts of endangering a child, one charge for each child involved.
As of Aug. 17, she remained in the Gregg County Jail without bond, the Texas outlet reported. It was not immediately clear whether Hubbard-Woodson had obtained an attorney to represent her in the case.
The allegations described in the arrest affidavit are part of the criminal case, and Hubbard-Woodson has not been convicted of the charges.
Child Welfare Investigation Continues
The case highlights the role of welfare checks and emergency intervention when authorities receive concerns about children’s safety.
For the three children involved, CPS custody and medical treatment followed the police discovery, while the criminal case against Hubbard-Woodson moves forward.
