Broward County, FL — A 27-year-old woman accused of posing as a caregiver to gain access to elderly victims is now facing 86 criminal charges, according to court records, as detectives investigate additional cases involving what authorities described as a similar scheme.
Jamisha Shamari Sylvain appeared in bond court again Wednesday to face new allegations, including armed and unarmed burglary of an occupied dwelling, third-degree grand theft, exploitation of an elderly person involving less than $20,000, and fraudulent use of personal information.
The latest charges add to a case that began months ago and has continued to grow as investigators identified additional incidents.
Initial arrest followed alleged caregiver ruse
Sylvain was first arrested in December 2025 after authorities received reports involving an elderly man who was allegedly being exploited by a woman posing as a caregiver.
The reported incident was connected to B’nai B’rith I, II, and III in Deerfield Beach, where investigators began looking into allegations involving Sylvain.
Authorities say she was not actually employed as a caregiver in the manner she allegedly represented herself.
After her December arrest, Sylvain was released from jail in May 2026. Investigators continued examining the circumstances surrounding the earlier allegations and eventually identified additional cases.
According to Broward Sheriff’s Office officials, detectives have since uncovered at least two new cases involving what they described as a “similar ruse.”
Detectives allege she falsely identified herself
Investigators said Sylvain allegedly used a false identity to gain the confidence of elderly victims.
Authorities have not publicly detailed every allegation connected to all 86 charges, but the newly filed cases include allegations involving burglary, theft, exploitation and the fraudulent use of personal information.
The accusations have also prompted renewed attention to security procedures at senior living communities, where staff members and security personnel can play an important role in identifying people who may not have legitimate reasons to enter.

One Deerfield Beach senior living community said its security team intervened when Sylvain allegedly attempted to enter while falsely presenting herself as an employee.

Lauren Rogers, vice president of brand marketing at Sinceri Senior Living, said Sylvain was never an employee of The Pointe at Deerfield Beach.
“Jamisha Shamari Sylvain is not, and has never been, an employee of The Pointe at Deerfield Beach. Ms. Sylvain falsely identified herself as an employee of the community to gain entrance, but a member of our security team recognized the situation, intervened promptly and contacted law enforcement,” Rogers said.
She added that the security team’s response helped protect residents and assist investigators.
“Their vigilance and quick action helped protect our residents and assisted law enforcement in its response. Ms. Sylvain was subsequently taken into custody. The safety and security of our residents are of the utmost importance.”
Arrest follows hours-long standoff
Sylvain was ultimately taken into custody Monday night after an hours-long standoff, officials said. Her subsequent appearance in bond court Wednesday came as prosecutors pursued the newly filed allegations.
The growing number of charges reflects multiple allegations rather than a single incident, and the criminal cases will proceed through the court system.
For now, Sylvain faces 86 charges, according to records, while authorities continue investigating allegations that she used false representations to gain access to vulnerable residents.
