Irvine, CA — A California car enthusiast and a Florida woman he had been talking to online were killed in a horrific McLaren crash early Sunday morning, turning what was reportedly their first date into a deadly nightmare.

James Wehr, 27, and Alexis “Lexi” Kramer, 22, died around 12:20 a.m. Sunday when Wehr’s 2019 McLaren slammed into a tree in Irvine, Orange County, according to authorities.

The impact was so violent that the supercar split in two and burst into flames, killing both people inside. Harrowing video from the scene showed the devastating extent of the wreck.

Kramer’s family later revealed that she had traveled from Lakeland, Florida, to California to meet Wehr in person after the pair spent about a month communicating through Instagram direct messages.

Florida woman flew to California for their first meeting

According to a member of Kramer’s family, Wehr paid for the 22-year-old to fly to California on Friday.

The trip came after weeks of conversations between the two. Kramer had never met Wehr face-to-face before making the journey, but the pair had reportedly developed a close relationship through their online conversations.

The family member said Wehr had told Kramer that he was separated from his wife, Emma, and that they were in the process of finalizing their divorce.

However, the relative said the divorce had not been filed with the courts in Orange County.

Kramer reportedly believed Wehr’s assurances that his marriage was effectively over. Her family had expressed concerns and warned her to remain skeptical about whether he was actually getting divorced.

But Kramer wanted to believe him.

“She tried so hard to give him the benefit of the doubt,” the family member said.

After Kramer arrived in California, the pair spent Saturday together. According to her family, Wehr first took her out for breakfast, before they went to Nobu for dinner and later had drinks at the Pendry.

A photo posted to Wehr’s social media account showed his flashy McLaren parked outside the hotel Saturday night. Earlier in the day, Kramer had also sent a photograph to a family member from breakfast.

Her message was simple: “At cute breakfast place.”

The photograph showed the side profile of a man whose tattoo sleeve appeared to match Wehr’s, according to her family. Hours later, the evening took a devastating turn.

Police reveal what happened before the McLaren crash

Police said the McLaren was stopped at a red light before accelerating at a high rate of speed when the light changed.

The driver then lost control, crossed a curb and crashed into a tree. The collision triggered the deadly fire, leaving the McLaren severely destroyed.

Authorities have not said who was driving the car at the time of the crash. Police also have not released a precise speed, as the investigation remains ongoing.

She knew he was married, but according to the family, she believed his explanation that the relationship was essentially over and that a divorce was being finalized.

Instead, the trip ended with the young woman and Wehr both dead in a fiery wreck.

Investigators continue to examine the circumstances of the crash, including what happened immediately before the McLaren lost control.
