For many years, trick-or-treating has been considered a practice that friends and families participate in to celebrate Halloween. As a way to celebrate, many kids knock door-to door-to display their festive costumes to residents in a neighborhood in hopes to acquire candy in return. Nonetheless, there comes a time when there should be an age requirement for participation in such festivities in order to prevent an array of problems that can arise.

First and foremost, I’m not saying that kids cannot trick-or-treat, of course not, to each their own, but perhaps having a city ordinance that limitis the age of participation can help families feel at ease when taking their children outside the confinements of their home where anything could escalate into a dangerous situation.

In addition, implementing age requirements for Halloween could also help maintain a safe atmosphere for children while also allowing them to cherish fun memories without putting children in harm’s way. The act of limiting the age of trick-or-treating could also prevent unwanted stress from parents as they would be assured that only kids that are within the same age group will be trick-or-treating together, which would overall increase the safety of this cherished tradition.

To be fair, the concern regarding crime would likely still persist; however, some of these problems would certainly be alleviated if teens were excluded from trick-or-treating activities. Teens are notably known for their daredevil-like behavior, as well as contributing to some Halloween spooks that may provoke little children.

In order to combat this situation, kids 15 and older should consider branching out to do more age-appropriate activities, perhaps visiting a haunted house or even watching scary movies to get in the right spirit! Leaving trick-treating to the children would more likely garner a safer environment while at the same time help preserve the essence of this momentous holiday tradition for everyone that’s involved!
