NASHVILLE, Tenn. — A routine school day at Whites Creek High School turned into a frightening situation for one Tennessee family after a teenager was injured when a piece of a comb or hair pick became lodged in his body.
Police officers were called to the Nashville high school shortly after 9:15 a.m. Tuesday, Sept. 8, following the incident.
Metro Nashville Public Schools said the student was taken to a hospital after the object became lodged in his body. In its initial response, however, the district characterized the incident as “horseplay” rather than an intentional act of violence.
The school district also said at the time that the student’s injuries were “not serious or life-threatening.”
That description would later become a major concern for the teenager’s father.
Father Says Son Suffered a Punctured Lung
The father, who declined to be identified to protect his son’s privacy, told WSMV in a follow-up interview that the injury was much more serious than he initially understood.
“It stuck him in his side. It actually punctured his lungs,” the father said.
According to the teen’s parent, he initially learned that police had been called to the school through a local news alert.
Not long afterward, school officials contacted him and told him his son had suffered what they described as a superficial injury and was being taken to the hospital.
The information immediately alarmed him.
“They did not state what was actually happening. And of course, as a parent, I panicked,” the father said.
He rushed to the hospital, where he waited for about two hours before learning more about the extent of his son’s injuries.
For the family, the situation became even more difficult as details about the incident began spreading online.
Video Circulates on Social Media
While the teenager and his family were still at the hospital, a video showing the incident began circulating on social media.
The father said the video sparked what he described as a social media storm filled with misinformation and finger-pointing.
He questioned why footage of what he described as a traumatic event involving children was being shared online.
“Why would anybody share something so traumatic to kids?” he questioned.
The spread of the video also added another layer of concern for the family, which was already trying to understand what had happened at the school.
The father said he had questions about the school’s handling of the incident, including whether a teacher was present when it happened and why the school had not issued a response to the circulating video by the following day.
“As a parent, I feel like it was handled not in a great way,” he said.
School District Responds to Concerns
Metro Nashville Public Schools later addressed questions about its initial description of the incident.
The district said its first comments were based on the limited information available at the time, while officials were still investigating what happened.
School officials also emphasized that they are restricted from providing certain information because of student privacy requirements.
“Given the student-specific nature of the matter and our obligations regarding student privacy, we are not able to provide additional details about the circumstances or any actions involving individual students,” the district said.
The school system added that it would continue cooperating with the Metropolitan Nashville Police Department and follow all applicable legal and disciplinary procedures.
Investigation Into School Incident Continues
The circumstances surrounding the incident remain under investigation.
Officials have not publicly released additional details about the students involved, including information that could identify the teenager or another student connected to the incident.
The district has also not provided further information about potential disciplinary action, citing student privacy restrictions.
For the teenager’s family, however, the incident has raised difficult questions about school safety, communication with parents and the dangers of seemingly harmless horseplay.
What initially appeared to officials to be a non-life-threatening injury ultimately resulted in a hospital visit and, according to the teen’s father, a punctured lung.
As police and school officials continue investigating, the family is left dealing with both the physical consequences of the injury and the fallout from a video that spread across social media.
