DIAMOND BAR, Calif. — A California assisted living facility became the scene of a devastating double murder in June 2023 when a caregiver killed two elderly residents during an overnight shift.
Jianchun Li, 44, was sentenced Thursday to life in prison without the possibility of parole after a Los Angeles County jury found him guilty of murdering Monica Moon Lee, 75, and Hee Sook Park, 83.
The killings happened inside a bathroom at the Happy Homes Care assisted living facility in Diamond Bar.
According to prosecutors, Li took Lee, who used a walker and had dementia, into the bathroom shortly before 7 a.m. He then killed her.
Roughly 30 minutes later, prosecutors said Li brought Park into the same bathroom and killed her in a similar manner. Emergency responders later pronounced both women dead at the scene.
Two Residents Killed Within 30 Minutes
The prosecution’s case centered on the sequence of events inside the facility and the fact that the two victims were killed within a remarkably short period.
According to the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office, Li used a plastic bag and electrical tape in both killings. The DA’s office said Li placed a plastic bag over Lee’s head and wrapped electrical tape around her neck before killing her.
About half an hour later, prosecutors said he took Park to the same bathroom and carried out the second killing using the same method. The victims were among the vulnerable residents entrusted to the facility’s caregivers.
The circumstances have therefore raised particular concern because Li was working in a position where he was expected to help care for residents and keep them safe.
Jury Convicts Li in 2023 Murders
A Los Angeles County jury convicted Li of both murders on Aug. 20. The conviction came nearly three years after Lee and Park were killed.
Li’s defense also argued that he should be found not guilty by reason of insanity. However, that defense was rejected by jurors one week after the murder convictions.
The decision cleared the way for Li to receive the maximum punishment available under his conviction.
On Thursday, the court sentenced him to life in prison without the possibility of parole, meaning he will not be eligible to seek release through parole.
Prosecutors Say Victims Were Entrusted to His Care
Los Angeles County District Attorney Nathan J. Hochman spoke about the case following Li’s conviction and emphasized the relationship between the victims and the person who killed them.
“Three years ago, Monica Moon Lee and Hee Sook Park’s lives were brutally taken by Jianchun Li, the very person expected to keep them safe,” Hochman said.
The district attorney thanked the jury for holding Li accountable and for rejecting his insanity defense.
Hochman also highlighted the vulnerability of the two women, who were residents at an assisted living facility where caregivers were responsible for their well-being.
The case has left the victims’ loved ones and the Diamond Bar community coping with the loss of two elderly women who were supposed to be protected in their care environment.
District Attorney Says Justice Was Served
Hochman said authorities hope the verdict provides some measure of closure for the families of Lee and Park.

“We hope this verdict brings a measure of closure to the victims’ loved ones and the Diamond Bar community,” he said.
He added that justice was served and that Li would be held fully accountable for what prosecutors described as horrific and senseless crimes.
The life-without-parole sentence ensures that Li will remain behind bars for the rest of his life. For the families, however, the conviction cannot erase the circumstances surrounding the deaths of their loved ones.
Life Sentence Brings Case to a Close
The final sentence follows a lengthy legal process that began after the June 2023 killings and included a murder trial, convictions and a separate determination rejecting Li’s insanity defense.
Lee and Park were killed within approximately 30 minutes of one another, according to prosecutors, while Li was working an overnight shift at the Diamond Bar care facility.
The case has also underscored the importance of protecting vulnerable residents in assisted living environments and ensuring that those entrusted with their care are held accountable when that responsibility is violated.
Li will now spend the rest of his life in prison without parole for the deaths of Monica Moon Lee and Hee Sook Park.
