UPPER POTTSGROVE, Pa. — A night that began with friends celebrating a birthday at a local bar ended in tragedy after a 22-year-old New Jersey college athlete was fatally shot by police at a home he allegedly mistakenly believed belonged to his friend.
Glenn “Bubba” Pysher had been out with friends Saturday night in Upper Pottsgrove, Pennsylvania, when the group decided to continue the celebration at a friend’s house, according to his family.
Pysher chose to walk to the home. But after having several drinks, he apparently went to the wrong residence without realizing it, his mother, Erin Pysher, told WPVI.
“He ended up at the wrong house after having a few drinks. He didn’t know that, so he was knocking on the door saying, ‘Hey, let me in.’ Thinking it was his friend’s house, but it wasn’t,” his mother said.
What happened next brought police to the property and ultimately left the family mourning the death of a young man they described as full of promise.
Police Respond to Possible Break-In Call
Just before 12:30 a.m., local police responded to a 911 call reporting a possible attempted break-in at the residence where Pysher had tried to enter, according to the Montgomery District Attorney’s Office.
The couple inside the home had reportedly been startled by the situation and contacted authorities.
Police later found Pysher at the rear of the residence, where authorities said an “encounter ensued.” Officers then opened fire, fatally shooting him.
The exact circumstances surrounding the shooting have not been publicly established.
Pysher’s mother said the timeline was painfully short.
“12:32, he was on the phone with his friends. By 12:35, I believe he’s already shot. So, within a few minutes, the cop pulled up and shot him. He was unarmed. He had a cell phone and a book bag,” Erin Pysher said.
Family Says He Was Preparing for College Baseball
Pysher was just days away from starting another chapter in his life.
The 22-year-old had recently transferred to Saint Elizabeth University in New Jersey and was expected to begin classes Monday. His family also said he was preparing to play baseball for the university.
Away from the baseball field, his mother described him as a fun-loving young man who brought energy into the family home.
“He will walk in the back door and say his favorite thing, ‘Hey mom, your favorite kid is home.’ He was just happy-go-lucky. Didn’t have a care in the world, and I’m going to miss that,” she said.
His family and friends say Pysher had a bright future ahead of him and was well-liked by those who knew him.
“He was an amazing soul, young man, never got in any trouble, well-respected,” family friend Kia told Fox 29.
Surveillance Video Could Help Explain Shooting
One of the central questions surrounding the case is why officers opened fire on Pysher after arriving at the property.
According to local reports, surveillance cameras at the home captured the deadly shooting in the backyard. That footage has become part of the investigation and could help authorities establish what happened during the encounter.
A family friend said Pysher’s loved ones are struggling to understand how the situation escalated so quickly.
“To see someone that has so much potential because he was so excited about going back to school, lose their life, it hurts,” Kia said.
She also questioned whether the confrontation could have ended differently.
“What happened? Could it have been de-escalated? We don’t know, but we want to figure that out,” she said.
Investigation Into Fatal Police Shooting Continues
The Montgomery County Detective’s Bureau is investigating the shooting, according to the district attorney’s office.
At this stage, authorities have not publicly explained what occurred during the encounter between Pysher and the officers or what prompted officers to use deadly force.
The investigation is expected to examine the events leading up to the shooting, including the 911 call, officers’ response, witness accounts and surveillance footage from the property.
For Pysher’s family, however, the investigation comes as they grieve a young man who was preparing to return to school and begin playing college baseball.
The circumstances surrounding his death remain under investigation, and additional details could emerge as authorities review the evidence.
