Florida Mother Allegedly Attacks Teacher, Principal After Being Told Parents Couldn’t Enter School During First Week

Daytona Beach, Florida — A dispute over a child’s forgotten backpack reportedly turned into a physical confrontation during the first week of school when a Florida mother allegedly attacked an elementary school teacher and principal after being told she could not enter the building.

According to a probable cause arrest affidavit, Lynesia Dorsey approached her daughter’s teacher at Turie T. Smalls Elementary School around 2:30 p.m. on Aug. 13, shortly after classes had ended. She reportedly wanted to go inside the school to retrieve her daughter’s backpack, which had been left in a classroom.

What began as an argument allegedly escalated into a physical attack that resulted in Dorsey’s arrest.

School Would Not Allow Parents Inside

According to police, the teacher was positioned near the school’s entrance when Dorsey approached him and explained that she wanted to retrieve the backpack.

The teacher reportedly told her that parents were not being allowed inside the school during the first week of classes because staff members were needed to maintain student safety.

The affidavit states that the policy was in place because “all staffing” was needed to ensure the safety of students.

Dorsey allegedly disagreed with the decision and began arguing with the teacher. When the teacher continued to refuse her request to enter the building, police say the situation became physical.

Teacher Allegedly Punched Several Times

Investigators allege that Dorsey punched the teacher several times in the face.

The school’s principal then reportedly attempted to restrain or hold Dorsey back as the confrontation continued. According to police, Dorsey allegedly punched the principal as well.

The incident was reportedly captured on school surveillance video, which investigators cited as evidence in the case.

The confrontation eventually ended after a school resource officer arrived and separated those involved.

Teacher and Principal Suffered Minor Injuries

Police said both school employees suffered minor injuries during the alleged confrontation. Their reported injuries included bruises and cuts, according to the arrest affidavit.

Dorsey also reportedly suffered an injury during the incident, including a wrist injury and a cut on her elbow.

When questioned by police, Dorsey allegedly acknowledged that she attacked the teacher. However, she reportedly claimed she did so because she believed the teacher had “leaned on” her and her daughter.

The circumstances surrounding that claim remain part of the police account of the incident.

Mother Arrested and Released on Bond

Following the confrontation, officers arrested Dorsey and transported her to the Volusia County Jail. She is facing a charge of battery on a school employee.

Dorsey has since posted a $5,000 bond, according to the available court information. Her next court appearance is scheduled for Sept. 8.

The case comes during the opening weeks of the school year, when schools commonly implement additional safety procedures and restrictions as students and staff settle into new routines.

The allegations remain allegations, and the criminal case will proceed through the court system.
