AP Bio Students Research Cellular Respiration

Upperclassmen Conduct Cell Lab

Mr. Seale’s AP Biology class conducted a cellular respiration lab Monday, December 5, in the science lab. Students measured the rate of cellular respiration of germinating seeds and compared different temperatures among the seeds. Mr. Seale’s students also designed their own experiment so they could test for a different variable.

The students crafted the experiment themselves, using materials to create respirometers.

“We made our own respirometers by combining a capillary tube and a syringe with hot glue and washers,” Jessica Scheer (12) said. “We had a control, which was glass beads.”

The control of the experiment were lentils.

“Mainly, we put a drop of dye in the other end of the capillary tube,” Hailey Thompson (12) said. “And as the oxygen was consumed, it pulled the dye down so we could see that it had formed some type of vacuum.

According to the class, everyone’s outcome was different when it came to the custom experiments.

“The results varied.” Will Traylor (12) said. “There were many different variables (such as temperature) and possibilities, so no one got the same result.”
