Step It Up

Students line up by Mrs. Tomlin’s door, eager to sign up for the schools new step team. There’s an even mix between girls and guys. As the sign ups occur, Mrs. Tomlin shares information about practices, performances, and expectations.

The captain of the team, Ashley Brooks, has organized the team.

“I kind of wanted to start something different, to give people a feel of something different so they can try something new,” said Ashley Brooks (12). “I kind of want to showcase American culture and give people the chance to express their feelings through dancing and stepping.”

While this is a team sport, she has a vision and wants it to be more.

“This is a team, but I want it to be more like a family,” said Ashley Brooks (12).

One of the team members, Sam Algarin, is excited to be a part of the step team.

“I think this is a great opportunity to go out there and show people my dancing skills,” said Sam Algarin (12). “It sounds cool and it’s a good way to show school spirit. It sounds fun, and I want my friends to do it.”

Ashley and Mrs. Tomlin have worked together to plan some events for the step team.

“We’ll be performing for the school,” said Ashley Brooks (12). “Pep rallies, games, even for Walnut Grove students.”

Step team is a new concept to many students, but Ashley does a good job of explaining what it is and who can join.

“Stepping is expressing who you are through dancing and stepping. I don’t want just one type of group of people doing it, and I want a good mixture of guys and girls,” said Ashley Brooks (12).

The team members are determined to make this a fun activity.

“I want to show people that it’s fun to have school spirit,” said Sam Algarin (12). “I’m a friendly person, so I’ll make sure that everybody’s having a great time in there.”

In the next few months and weeks, the team will be preparing for their performances with once-a-week practices. The team and the captain will be working hard to make their dance as perfect as it can be.

“I’m so ready for this,” said Ashley Brooks (12). “I’m so excited.”
