OPINION: Gun Control, Why it is Dangerous

The idea of gun control laws seems logical. Fewer guns, fewer mass shootings, fewer murders, a better country, right? The issue that many gun control advocates aren’t considering is that murderers and mass shooters are already breaking many laws. The only thing gun laws will do is prevent normal citizens from arming themselves and therefore adding protection to every household. There is also a possibility that having more gun owners would protect from mass shootings.

According to Dosomething.org, every mass shooting since 1950 in the US, with the exception of one, happened in an area where guns are not allowed. Murderers are already breaking the law by killing. While accidents do happen, adding gun control laws isn’t going to stop a murderer from killing someone. They obviously have no respect for the law anyway, so adding more laws will not stop murders from happening.

Having gun restrictions sounds good, but only in theory. These laws are meant to make it harder to get guns, including going through extensive background checks, which simply is wasting resources, especially since we have a right to own guns. Yes, I am talking about the much mentioned Second Amendment. This amendment was not created for protection against other citizens, contrary to popular belief, but to protect us from our own government. According to George Mason who co-wrote the Second Amendment, “I ask, Sir, what is the militia? It is the whole people. To disarm the people is the best and most effectual way to enslave them.”  Not only will these laws endanger our fellow citizens, but it will also be unconstitutional.

The idea of taking guns away from mass murderers sounds great. While it would be nice to be able to do this, it is not realistic. One thing we can do is make it easier to own guns. To have someone able to use a gun nearby would help protect everyone. In some of the most recent mass shootings, it may have been very simple for a citizen carrying a gun to kill the murderers before too many lives were lost.

Gun control laws are a good idea, but that’s all they will ever be. Taking away the easy access to guns is not achievable when broken down. This is stripping normal citizens of their protection. Also, murderers who kill with guns have no respect for laws and adding another law will not stop them from killing. Having more guns would be effective protection against mass shootings. With more trained eyes around carrying guns, it would be simple to stop large-scale murders without there being too many lives lost.
